Staying fit and active does not have to be expensive. There are plenty of ways to get your heart rate up and break a sweat without spending money. As spring rolls out with warm and fresh outdoors, it is time to warm those muscles again. These three simple tips will come in handy to stay active and fit on a budget.

• Try Mindful Movement Start by being intentional about your daily movement. How? Make a conscious effort to move your body mindfully, even if it’s just doing simple things like house chores. Look for opportunities to add more activity into your day and focus on how your body feels as you move. For example, when you are doing the dishes, take a few extra moments to feel the water on your hands and the weight of the utensils. Use that time to clear your mind and focus on your breath. In addition, try to find small moments throughout the day to move your body mindfully. Even something as simple as taking a few deep breaths and stretching while sitting at your desk can make a difference. These actions help you become more aware of your physicality and learn to appreciate the movements that keep you fit and healthy. By being intentional about our movements, you can turn everyday activities into opportunities for mindfulness and fitness!

• Get in Those Steps Walking is an essential part of staying active. Most people assume the daily walk must be clocking 10,000 steps around the block or neighborhood every morning. However, you can be more creative about getting in those steps by walking downstairs to get your mail, putting away the groceries, or folding laundry.

• Workout at Home You don’t need a lot of equipment or space to start exercising at home. A yoga mat, comfortable clothes, and a water bottle are all you need to keep active at home. Plus, there are free online routines you can follow, or you can create your own based on what you enjoy. You can use these to start slow and build up gradually as you get more comfortable in a routine. A few exercises you can do at home include jump rope and yoga. Did you know on average, people burn 100 calories in 10 minutes of jumping rope? The old schoolyard game is cheap and effective for burning calories, weight loss, and cardiovascular fitness. Another easy way to get fit with less intensive workouts at home is doing yoga. The routines help strengthen your core muscles; all you need is a yoga mat.

• Final Thoughts Although it can be tough to find the time or money to invest in a personal trainer, yoga class, or gym membership, there are still many ways to stay active and fit without spending. And remember, it’s okay to start small; even ten minutes of exercise each day can make a big difference in your overall health and physical well-being.
