There is no beating around the bushes when it comes to matters of the heart. For this very same reason, this month I am skipping the pleasantries and getting right down to business. It is no secret that heart disease affects the African American community at a disproportionate rate. Often when you ask someone if they have any heart disease, they rarely mention their high blood pressure. In part it is because high blood pressure rarely presents with any symptoms. Before we go any further, let us get back to the basics, according to the American Heart Association, your blood pressure reading should be less than 120/80. This number can go up or down based on a lot of things. Stress, weight gain, illness, alcohol, and an unhealthy diet. Whether you are hypertensive or pre-hypertensive here are a couple of helpful tips to help keep your heart healthy.
