Letter from the Editor – February 2023

As you know, heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death for African Americans. But did you know that black women are more likely to develop heart disease than their white counterparts?

The Benefits of Pomegranate

It’s no secret that pomegranates are a superfood. The fruit is high in antioxidants, which can help prevent heart disease and cancer. It also contains potassium, vitamin C and fiber–three nutrients that are often lacking in American diets.
But did you know that pomegranate juice has been shown to reduce blood pressure? Or that it could be used as an alternative to soda or alcohol? Or how about this: Pomegranate juice contains ellagic acid (EA), a compound thought to block the growth of new blood vessels into tumors–which may explain why some studies have linked EA consumption with lower rates of prostate cancer.

Screenwriting as a Hobby

Biking for Health

Biking is a great way to stay healthy, and it’s also an excellent activity for people who are trying to lose weight. The best part about biking is that you can do it anywhere–you don’t need any special equipment or facilities, just your bike and helmet (if you’re riding solo).
If you have never ridden a bicycle before, the most important thing is to start small: go on short rides around the neighborhood at first until you get used to being on two wheels! Once you’ve mastered this skill, try exploring other areas by bike instead of driving or taking public transportation. You’ll be amazed at how much more fun it is when there aren’t any cars around!
You may want some help getting started with biking–here are some tips:
