Walk This Way: A 30 Day Walking Plan for You

African Americans are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Oftentimes, these diseases are preventable, reversible or managed with a healthy diet and exercise. Walking is a great way to start incorporating more movement into your life because it’s low impact and something you can do just about anywhere. This article by The Mayo Clinic, lists so many reasons to get started. Whether you want to lose or maintain your weight, increase your endurance or relieve stress, walking is a great option.
Making walking a habit starts with things you do everyday. You can park further away, take the stairs or make walking a family activity after dinner. The key is to plan what you will do and when. I whole-heartedly believe in “what gets planned gets done”, but only if you are realistic about the time you have to give. Always consult your medical provider before beginning any type of exercise plan. Once you are cleared to start, begin where you are. Use the first week to get a sense of where you are energetically. Don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t where you thought you would be. Give yourself some grace and celebrate the fact that you are doing something amazing for your mind, body and spirit.

Set a goal for your first 30 days or walking. Make sure to challenge yourself each week to reap all the great benefits walking has to offer. You can increase your distance or speed, adjust your incline, or increase your frequency. Choose one to get consistent with before adding on. Create a plan that you can stick to.

#MyJam- Lately Beyonce’s Renaissance album gets me in the mood to walk no matter what’s going on. Find something that always gets you moving and commit to listening to it every day. I have it scheduled in my planner and as an event in my phone.
